Sort before entering quantities
A denomination counter is most useful after the physical cash has been sorted. Make separate piles for each note value and for coins. Enter quantities of pieces, rather than the money value of each pile. For example, three NPR 100 notes means quantity 3 in the 100-note row, not 300.
The common view includes regularly encountered notes and separate NPR 1 and NPR 2 coin rows. An optional view adds uncommon older note denominations. Nepal Rastra Bank’s denomination information includes older 1, 2, 25 and 250 notes that are no longer newly issued; that does not by itself label an existing note invalid. Verify questions about validity directly with NRB.
Use both amount and piece count
Consider two 1000 notes, one 500 note, three 100 notes, two 20 notes, one 5 note, four 2 coins and two 1 coins. The amounts are 2000 + 500 + 300 + 40 + 5 + 8 + 2 = NPR 2855. The piece count is 2 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 15.
The piece count provides a second check. If the money total looks right but the number of physical pieces differs, revisit the denomination quantities. Keeping coins and notes in distinct rows avoids treating a coin pile as a note pile when recounting.
| Pieces | Subtotal NPR |
|---|---|
| 2 × 1000 notes | 2000 |
| 1 × 500 note | 500 |
| 3 × 100 notes | 300 |
| 2 × 20 notes + 1 × 5 note | 45 |
| 4 × 2 coins + 2 × 1 coins | 10 |
| Total: 15 pieces | 2855 |
Recount a discrepancy methodically
If your expected cash is NPR 3000 and the entered total is 2855, the arithmetic difference is 145. That does not establish whether money is missing: the expected amount, physical count or typed quantities could be wrong. Check one denomination at a time and compare the table with the piles.
- Sort notes and coins into clear groups.
- Enter a whole-number quantity for each denomination.
- Enable uncommon note rows only when relevant.
- Calculate and compare subtotals with the piles.
- Export the CSV if a count record is useful.
Keep the counter’s scope clear
The utility does not authenticate currency, inspect security features or reconcile a bank account. It also does not record a transaction history. Use the appropriate bank or business process for authenticity checks and formal cash reconciliation.
A downloaded count is a snapshot of your entries. Add the count date and responsible person in your own records if needed, without exposing unnecessary personal information. Recount important cash independently and keep the source records. For a written total, use the Nepali number-words tool and verify the wording against the numeric amount before adding it to a document.
